Grrr. Well, i had kept this 20 gallon tank as plants only for quite some time. When the plants started to show signs of nitrate deficiency, i decided to restock it with some fish. All was well for some time, but my last nitrate test shows zero nitrate again, i suppose i can blame these fast growing chain swords. How difficult is it to dose nitrate in the form of stump remover? And how difficult is it to find the product? It's "green light stump remover" or something to that effect, right?

Yes, it's called Green Light Stump Remover. It can be found at garden places such as Lowe's. It's very easy to dose. I simply mix 1 tablespoon of Stump Remover (KNO3) with 125 mL of water. Edited to add: I just wanted to say that only 1 mL of the above solution is needed for a 20 gallon (each time). You'll have to monitor the levels to determine how often to dose. Do not dose the whole mixture! :p

Check out Chuck's page on dosing nitrates.

Thanks, that's very helpful! I guess i ought to confirm the nitrate test before i consider dosing though, i have the dry tab test. Maybe i'll wait until there are signs of deficiency again.
