Alright, I'm new to this. This is a new hoppy that caught my attention from a friend. I've decided that I want to go the freshwater route. As of now, I have my tank, stand, and filter system. I bought a 45 gal. tank...dimensions are 36x12x24. I bought the Fluval 404 canister filter system. Last night I put water in the tank and got the filter system going. Also, I need to buy a heater since I like to keep my house at around 70 degrees. I think I'm going to purchase African fish. Still debating that, but right now I want to get my tank set up. What should I use for the bottom and how much should I use? I know I need to buy a test kit and decorting stuff. Is there anything that I'm missing? I'm sure there is. Also, any other helpful tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey welcome here, glad to see you validated.

Getting second opinions I see, that is always a good thing. The more opinions you get the better off you are when it comes to this hobby.

You might want to check out the FAQ's at the top of this forum http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=88643 for a little help. However, to start out you need, a tank and stand, substrate (that can be gravel, sand, and if you're getting african cichlids you can get aragonite sand to help buffer your PH), a heater, a thermometer, filter, dechlorinator, a test kit, and decorations of some sort. You'll also need pure ammonia if you're doing a fishless cycle, which I would recommend. And, while you're waiting for the tank to cycle, you should check out your local LFS and compile a list of fish you like. Then, research the fish, and post possible lists on here, everyone is very helpful and will let you know what will work together. It's a little overwhelming at first, but once you get everything set up, you'll find it's well worth it. Welcome to TFF and the joys of fish keeping. :hi:
