i went on the hunt for a new tank last week....but my girlfriends mum found a 2nd hand rio 125 in vgc so i went and had a look n it was perfect.......the girl sellin it said she had 3 catfish but 1 was gettin large....so when i asked how big she had her fingers about 3 inches apart......so i said okay...and off i toddled til it was ready to pick up

when i went back i had a look at her fish and dammmmmmmmmmmmm

3 inches.....NOT!!!

she had 3 synodontis angelicus.......all about 6 inches long and the large 1 is about 7 inches

anyway......its gonna be a cichlid tank......so has any1 got any thoughts on any types of cichlids to get.....c'mon guys n gals....get ur thinkin caps on

Tek :fish:

well...... south ameriacn or indian cichlids are kool... i like orange chromides, angelfish , discus, kribs, rams, jewel cichlid........and many more great cichlids!!!!! :D

Have to be a dwarf species in a tank that size, members of the Apistogramma family are very pretty.

I wouldn't reccomend discus unless you have had experience with cichlids. They are extremely picky on there water, diet etc.. ;) (if your interested and never had exp in cichlids try getting some easier ones) :D

well ive got a couple of cichlids in a smaller tank......a jewel, a krib and 3 firemouths but it looks like the firemouths arfe gonna have to go.....as ive been told that they dont keep well with 'proper' cichlids

theres a few on fishprofiles.com.......and like cfc said id have to go for the dwarf cichlids or ones that dont grow past 3 inches......theres some lovely ones tho :D

Tek :fish:

i paid £150 for the tank n stand......with it i got an extra heater and filter......lots of plants....air pump....£18 a-z of fish health book......3 large synodontis angelicus (estimated £15 each)....a large silver shark (estimated £12)....and a few other lil platties n cory's n that

What do you mean? What are proper cichlids? :/

well i was told that they is pretty docile compare to all the other cichlids that chase eachother n not really suited to a full cichlid set up but they okay for a community tank......not sure if this is true but 3 different lfs have told me this

please pass on ur wisdom to me smb :D

I'm sorry you took my post as maybe disagreeing with you. :)

I didn't mean that at all. I just didn't know what you meant so I asked is all. :)

I still don't know what you mean tho. :D

What is more docile than others?

In order of aggro of the 3 you mentioned starting from least to most, imo-

Kribs
Firemouths
Jewels

I'm sorry for the confusion tho tekniz.

I didn't mean to try and dispute what you said when I posted above. Just wanted to know what you meant because I learn from others and if I don't ask I can't learn. Hope you forgive me for the misunderstanding. :)

i paid 230 pounds for my rio 125 from lfs but i got free gravel a two plants free aswell!!! :D

also if u want to use this for stocking here u go if not nm

before u guys so excited about this new formula, its nots new its in both of my fish books!!!!! but the one givern to me is more correct and better for newbies its it like the 1 inch of fish to a gallon but more accurate !!!!! as both books recomend it i think its better . the one on the net its stupid there is no way u one 2 inch fish can have a living spce of 6 sq.in.!!!!!!which is 15 sq. cm its tiny!!!!! i mean this rule on the net compared to the 1 inch for every gallon says can have double the fish i have now in my 30 galllon tank, which is rubbish!!!
there is a better metthod found in these books
Aquarium Fish by Dick Mills (famous guy been doing fishing keeping 30 years!!)
Aquarium an owners manual by Gina Sandford

the method!!!!
this is quoted guys!!

when stocking a tank, the most critical factor is surface area, rather than the total volume of water.the aqurium deth is irrelevent, its the water/airinterfaceat the surface that determines the amount of dissolved oxygen needed to support life.a 160 litre (35 gallon) tank, if 100 cm long x 40 cm deep x 40 cm wide(39 x 16 x 16 in.),will have the surface area of 4000 sq. cm (625 sq in.); alternatively, it mabe be 75 cm long x 52 cm deep x 40 cm wide (30 x 20 x 16 in.) , with a surface area of 3000 sq. cm (480 sq. in.) . although both tanks hold the same amount of water, the one with the larger surface area will suport more fish. to find the correct stocking level, first calculate the surface area by multiplying the tank length by its width.then establish the adult body length of the fish you plan to keep in the tank; for each 2.5 cm (1in.), you will require 75 sq. cm (12 sq. in.) of tank space for tropical freshwater species,180 sq cm (28 sq in.) for coldwater freshwater fish ,and 300 sq cm (47 sq in.) for tropical marine species.
in certain cases, fish may require more or less space than average.for example the discus, which gorws to 15 cm (6 in.),is best kept in pairs with little else in the tank.only in this way are you likly to grow these fish to maturity and have them breed.with good water turnover and effient filtraion, stocking levels may be slightly incresed.however , do not rely on equipment to support a heavily stocked aquarium;mechanical failure could prove disastrous.remember also that fewer fish often look far more impresive than a tank crammed with bodies.

so the basic rule is "for every inch (2.5 cm) of fish you will requies 75 sq. cm"

so i did this to my tank so i did 36 cm x 81 cm =2916 sq.cm

i sthen figured out howmnay inches of fish i could keep by

2916 divided by 75 = 38.88 inches of fish!!!

i then added alll the inches of fish i had 3.75 + 6+6+4.5+4+4+4=32.25
which menas i am not over stocked!!! an di have enuf space to put babies in my tank to grow yup a little so i can sell them to the lsf !!!!

this method is used by dick mills!!!!!!!!!! DICK MILLS!!! i mena if hes been using it for the majority of 30 years its must work so i have my faith in this formula!!! no that stupid unrealistic formula !!!! whoever made it up was stupid and is mean to his fishes!!!

hahaha i didnt think u were smb

i just mean that i was told by 3 different sources that i couldnt keep the firemouths with the more popular cichlids as they are more aggressive

proper cichlids to me are the aggressive ones hahaha

sorry for any confusion

anyway.......what types would any1 recommend?
