tank is around 22 gal
31 long 15 high 13 deep

what i would idealy want is a kind of fish that looks after its young, weather it be mouth brooding or whatever.
other things id like to have would be very sharp colours, red, yellow ,blue etc but im talking SHARP ( when fish are happy obv)

also i plan on keeping shrimp in the tank but am not to concerned about them getting eaten once in a while as they are cherry shrimp and have kids like every other day.

any idea please post

also the tank will be very planted with lots of hiding spaces/caves

Just a question, have you got a plan of what to do with the young? I mean with good parenting fish you wont really lose many young and so you will need a LFS or similar where you can pass them onto.

Livebearers and rainbows are probably your most colourful of species but neither are parenting fish.

Dwarf cichlids are possibly your best option with rams or apistos being the most likely to work, However larger fish may eat the smaller shrimp.

forgot to mention there will be a 12 gallon sump with this setup.

Blue rams are nice and colourful. Kribensis are also very good parents, but not too colourful. The best parents though, in my opinion are discus, but I think your tank is too small to keep a group of 5. They are also not beginner fish ( sorry, do not know how much experience you have with fish keeping; no offense!) and are really fuzzy about their water quality.
