Hallo Peeps

I am shortly going to be making a couple of purchases of vallis-type plants for my fully planted 36x12x18 live-bearer tank

Its taken me ages to get a live-bearer set-up disease free, virtually all my guppies and platies are either home grown or F1's

Therefore i dont like adding anything "LFS" to this set-up

But i have seen some plants i want, question is...................

Whats the safest way to ensure the plants i bring back from the LFS do not contain any unwanted bacteria's, parasites, or fungi when they go into my beloved set-up?

I have heard of peeps using Myaxin for this purpose,

please share your thoughts and experiences on this

Thanks

just make sure the plants are not kept with any fish in your lfs. The places i go all have tanks just for plants. Therefor if theres no fish, no chance of fishy diseases.

I have been told (2x peeps) i can use a solution of 10% bleach!!!!!

What do peeps think about this?

Yes you can use a dilute solution of bleach. I have read 1 part bleach to 19 parts water, or 5% strength. If you read the latest practical fishkeeping you can see an article near the back on traditional plant methods, including bleaching new plants to get rid of disease and also snails. Just make sure you rinse them well in freshwater with extra dechlorinator first so the chlorine in the bleach doesn't affect your tank.

I know that if you order plants online from 'Greenline', all their plants are treated for snails etc.

And normally this will mean in a copper solution, and there are some posts in threads in the planted section that blame new plants for shrimps, snails or other invertebrates dying as copper is a poison to them.

I personally get the plants, wash them carefully in normal water and put em straight in. If you don't overfeed then the snails should eventually die off.

Bleach can harm some plants, and personally I don't want even the smallest chance of bleach in my tank.

I do have snails from plants but not to a problematic level, although they used to annoy me a little.

To be fair to Greenline, they do at least have a notice that warns people that their plants are treated in that way, and to rinse them thoroughly. I don't think all online retailers do, though.

Recently i have been using plants by Tropica from a local garden centre, and they have always been pretty good quality, i know my tanks haven't caught anything off them either apart from a few snails, but hey what's a few more when i have loads already! :)

to be honest, i wouldnt worry about a fish disease being transfers as i have never heard of this, but do check for snails as they hitchhike on plants and before you know it, boom! lots of snails in your tank, very annoying
