hi everyone i just got 2 swordtails,1 mickey mouse platy,2 sunset platys n a angel fish..yay is this a good tank for them??

I'd return the swordtails too, as they can get to 4". Personally, I'd not keep platies in a tank that small, but that's my personal preference, it is possible to I'm sure. The basic rule is 1" of adult fish per gallon. Platies get to 2-2.5", so if you return the angel and swordtails, you have 6-7.5" of fish in there. You could get another platy, or maybe push the boat out and get 5 dwarf rasbora or similarly sized fish. Platies will breed though (ours are so prolific I wouldn't doubt they could breed on dry land lol) - so be prepared to either cull or get another tank to raise the fry in ;) If you put some real plants in, that will help keep the nitrates under control.

... Lisa... that rule of thumb is applied VERY losely... IMHO the rule of thumb only apply to fish under 3", as I bet a 12" oscar would not be happy in a 12gallon tank...

oh god thats bad i thought that it stayed little..well what kind of of gallon should i get??i was thinking 55 gallon, will that be better for them? i really want to keep them..and how many fishes can i keep in a 55 gallon tank? i saw some tiger barbs and i would like to add them to my new tank when i get it.

Tiger barbs are a no with the angle, I kept a shoal of 8 with 4 angles for a while and had no problems with fin nips, however 5 of the 8 died and the other 3 became little buggers... Best bet is to stay away from tiger barbs and go with more angle fish... depending on the species of fish for the 55gallon tank, you could have anywhere from 10-32 different fish... (32 is a large number, but I'm being lienant and thinking of only schooling fish such as neon tetras, zebra danios etc.) with larger fish like angles and swordtails I'd say anywhere from 12-23... mind you I'd understock that tank because swordtails breed like rabbits...

This is because they were kept in too few numbers (when there were 3 of them). They need to be kept in large groups to avoid aggression towards other fish and towards other barbs in their school, thats why when you had 8 of them they were fine.
Brigette, as long as the angelfish you have doesn't have gigantic, flowing fins (there are some varieties that are like this, while some of the "wild" types should be fine) then a school of tigers barbs would be fine (IF you upgrade the tank). 10 or so should work. However I am not 100% on this, so wait for other peoples opinions before taking my word.
A 55 gallon would be a great size, it would fit all your current fish and you'd have room to add more. What genders are your swordtails and platies? Its best to have 2/3 females for every male, to avoid the male harrassing the one female. You won't have to worry about being overun with fry in this case, as the angelfish will take care of this, and if you do get a few that survive its not like you don't have the room.

Meg, I'm well aware that my tiger barbs were better off in a larger group... that's why I put my story in there... 3 tiger barbs left, 7 more to come...

Angelfish can get very big.

People have said they have seen them as big as a bread plate that you put your bread on at dinner time..

If you get the 55 gallon (which is a nice size tank for the beginner) then a group of at least 8 Tiger Barbs will almost certainly be fine with your Angel. Tiger Barbs have one of the worst reputations in the fish trade and yet this is probably more to do with the fishkeeper than the fish itself. When kept as they should be the Tiger Barb will not bother with any other fish other than the other Tiger Barbs. It is when we as fishkeepers keep them in a group too small so they feel happy that we get the problems.

You never stated that though, all you said was you had a bunch, they were fine, then when they died off they turned aggressive, you did not say that the reason they turned aggressive was because there were not enough of them. You then stated that they aren't ok with angelfish, as they are too nippy, however they were only nippy when they were kept in a small group. So I had to step in and make it clear to the OP that as long as they are in a large group, then they won't be aggressive.
