ok had this fella since Friday and been acclimatizing him into new home which he has settled very quickly.... I acclimatise his bag and mixed water for about 3 hours on receipt as I was aware of the difference in ph at that time I think 6.8 to 7.4. Didn't want to shock him.

Ok The only meds I have at the moment are both JBL fluid and cristal my LFS sold them to me couple years ago when I had Columnaris and said they work well together.

Basically Ektol fluid against finrot contains per 100ml
Benzalkonium chloride 700mg
Methylene blue 40mg

Ektol cristal against fungal contains per 100g
Tosylchloramide-sodium 4.8g
sodium percarbonate 3g
di-sodium tetraborate 0.3g
potassium chlorate 0.2g

Can I use either of these? I remember not using the fluid as it would have killed my tank bacteria and the cristal was very effective at removing a horrible strain of Columnaris which was killing my fish over three days. BTW this is not same tank I have raised 7 platy fry in here and only removed the last four to accommodate the betta so I know the illness is from the LFS and my media obviously mature as result above speak for themselves!

I have a small 1 gallon tank with small heater I would rather not move him again although I guess I have to weigh up the stress of that to stress of losing the bacteria but I do want to take all the action I can now as he is the first fish that has got all the family involved now and don't want to lose him!

Appreciate the help!

Olly.

ok not sure what response I will get today being Easter and all I have decided to does with Cristal for now as it mentions fungal and other infection so Column etc... then if unsuitable I can get something else tomorrow when the shops open.

I will try to check back later I appreciate any help..

Thanks.

Olly.

Seen any improvement since adding the med.

Hi Wilder yes it *seems* to be good stuff this JBL but as ick has been diagnosed since I posted here I guess I should dose for another week to make sure the larval stages are wiped out. The instructions don't give any specific info toward treating different diseases. It says to combine this with another JBL product if the ick is persistant... Have you seen the other thread in the betta section as I would appreciate your comments Wilder :good:

I would like to know how this med differs from more traditional ick / column meds and whether it is an effective alternative (which to appears to be atm) too if possible!

BTW Sorry I didn't reply earlier the emails I get are spurious at best and so I have to trawl through threads to see if I have reply's. Very annoying

The only jbl med I've used it furanol and it wipes the benefical bacteria out in the filter.
The greyish spot might be a columnaris spot and they are quite hard to get rid off. Any redness to the greyish spot. How big are the spots and is there more than one spot.
Red streaking can be bad water quality, to septicemia.
Here the list of jbl meds.

Have you dosed the tank with a whitespot med now.

Hi Wilder yes I am convinced the greyish spot on the head was a column spot along with the greyish fuzz on the fins. However the other folk suggested the line of four dots was white spot however it was also grey and looked a little larger and less defined than what I would have expected whitespot to look like. Not visible from all angles either but maybe mucus had changed it's look..?

I continued with the JBL Ektol cristal as it suggested that it was good to use for both column and whitespot so I felt I was killing two birds with one stone so to speak and erring on side of caution without administering a cocktail of drugs lol.

Today he seems much better the grey spot has pretty much vanished from the head and the other spots too no fuzz on the anal fins they just need to repair themselves now. Not sure about one of the pectoral fins, didn't pay much attention here as it seemed less of a concern (just ripped) but not sure if there is a tiny white grey area where some of the webbing missing. I will try to get a close picture later.

I think if it was column he is on the mend. if there was some whitespot I guess time will tell and maybe I should start using whitespot med, despite this stuff claiming to treat disease? Also I completed one course of this medicine which is 3 courses over a 5 day period, and today I have dosed as if to start another course, after a water change as per instructions.

Oh and the Crystal does not effect filter bacs which is good!

Picture I showed in the other thread..

All this has now cleared up the single spot isn't too clear on top of the head though.

I will post another pic later if I get a chance.

Whitesphot can look like a greyish white sometimes but it will be the size of a grain of salt.
Columnaris spots are bigger will look a greyish white but usually with a tinging of red.
Lymthocystis can show it's self on fins and body but that will look like a cluser of berries or a cauliflower.

Taken from the link.

Symptoms of this disease include grayish-white spots on some part of the head, fins, gills, or body usually surrounded by an area with a reddish tinge.

Hi Wilder just to let you know I think my Betta is clear of all illness now. I will finish this second course then leave the tank until next Saturday so there may be some meds present till then just in case.

It does seem to be quite effective this stuff I remember it cleared a nasty strain of columnaris (saddleback variation) which was rampant throughout my tank and seemed to kill fish in two days flat and now it seems to have cleared this up too (touch wood) so I am quite pleased :good:

Thanks for letting us know the med quite good as can suggest that med in future.
Glad the fish are ok and nearly back to full health

There some pinned sections at the top of the emergency page. Just add med to medications and ingredients.
Thanks.
