so i have about 10 nerite snails and recently i have noticed two of them dead but for about a month or maybe even two now some of the snails i will find upside down on the sand. They will stay like that for im not sure quite how long but next day they have moved to some other spot or i will manually flip them over to get them to be upright. However, this behavior seems unnatural, to expose there soft fleshy tissue.

Is this an indication of bad water quality?

They do very occasionally fall off things and end up on their backs. But mostly Nerites are very stable and stick to things very well. So if yours keep falling down, then there may be something stressing them. Nerites like clean, well oxygenated water. They don't like excessively warm water. A few species come from brackish water habitats, though these are less widely traded than they were in the past. The common species in the UK seem to be Neritina natalensis and Neritina coromandeliana, both true freshwater species from clear, fast-flowing streams. As with all snails, certain medications, in particular copper, are toxic to them.

Cheers, Neale

interesting, i thought all nerites came from brackish habitats and were simply eurothaline snails. But i have one in my freshwater planted tank which stays more along the lines of 75-76 degrees and it is much larger than its brackish tank brethren.
