Hi. I have a 15 gal tank with 3 mollies (2 female, one male) and 5 black kuhli loaches and two ghost shrimp. I had 11 neon tetras, found 3 bodies. I had an African Dwarf frog, but I moved to my 8 gal tank with my betta, Sparky because I thought he was eating my neons. Ammon, pH, nitrites, all in level. I read that my mollies like hard water but my reading is coming out as soft...

So when I fed this morning I found no neons in my tank. I moved the gravel a bit, which disturbed the loaches (they're very active at night but during the day I don't see them) but nothing floated up or swam out. So I moved to my 8 gal and fed Sparky and the frog. And low and behold, a neon pops out. 1 neon tetra is alive! I must have caught the little thing in the net when I grabbed the frog yesterday XD

So now I'm thinking mister Frog isn't eating the neons. But am totally not sure.
Because over the last week I went from 4-6, to 2 and now 1.

Which of these fish/frog eat Neons?
Black Molly
Cremecicle Molly (orange)
Black Kuhli Loach
African Dwarf Frog
Ghost Shrimp (lol)

I know Sparky, the betta fish, isn't eating them because they continued to disappear even after I removed him from the tank. Depending on who the culprit is, I'll re-arrange between my 8 gal and 15 gal. And then get 6 more neons.

PS I got 3 more loaches yesterday (bumping my total up to 5 but I only see 3 out at once at any given time, or at least I think so, they're very fast lol)

You say your levels are ok but what test kit are you using and what are the results please? It could be the frog but it could also possibly be the quality of the water, without a bit more info it`s difficult to be specific in answering your query :)

I use Mini-Master Test Kit (the brand name is rubbed off but it looks like Mara???)

It comes with test strips I dip in for 2 seconds, then wait 30 seconds and look at the colors. Except the ammon tester, which has a special tube for dipping in, and I have to wait 2 mins. My ammon is between 0 and 0.2, leaning closer to 0. My Nitrite is at 0. My Nitrate is at 20. Hardness is at 75 (soft). Alkalnitty is at 120. And my pH Is at 7.5

Frog

I swear.. i put a labwel on our congo frogs saying "Will eat neon tetras and anything smaller" and people sill ask me if they will eat neons or Endlers LOL

I've seen young congos eat half a tank of subadult Harlequins that were a good size and much deeper in the body than neons!

How can poor water quality make fish disappear?

I would suggest that first they die, then they are scavenged.

They die then are eaten by the other fish before you notice, as they're small. I've had neons just disappear!!

I've had the same fate with my neons... I think it might have been a combination of the two. (added them too soon to a new tank I believe) anyway, I've never had much luck period with those. It's such a shame because they are definitely one of my favorites.

I've now had 6 neons for eight months so doing well!! If you can get them through the first month or so they should be okay but they are quite fragile. Have lost loads of them in the past.

Yeah. i had a few make it past two months, but died off shortly after. Seriously considering giving it another go though.

You should. Try to look around for ones that aren't the very smallest and they sell. The 6 I've managed to keep were a bit bigger when I bought them, but not adult, so maybe that's why they've been okay. I'm not adding any more as I may bring in NTD and lose them all! I had 10 before this lot and they all died off within 6 weeks so these I have now really were going to be my last attempt. Guess I struck lucky. They are sensitive to water conditions so keep on top of water changes and they don't like it too warm. Mine are at 76deg. I know cardinals like it warmer but never tried those. You could give those a try. My dealer says they're hardier nowadays than neons!

I only have a choice of three 'pet stores' two of which are chain stores. not bad selection but who really knows how good of a quality, you know... the other one is a small store pet shop, so I'm guessing they would have a little more know how and a higher quality of fish. That's not a given though. I'm always afraid of bringing new fish in as i don't have a 'new fish' tank. I have thought about cardinals, but havent come across any yet. Believe I'm going out tonight fish shopping! wish me luck!
