Currently looking for up-to-date and reliable information about:

1) Collection rate and methods of capturing wild species for the aquarium trade.
2) Data on rates of Captive Bred vs Wild Caught species sold in LFS
3) Organizations that focus on and promote breeding of uncommon/rare species, and the preservation of wild stocks.

After doing some research on the breeding of Puntius denisonii (aka the Red Line Torpedo Barb), I discovered that due to aquarium popularity these fish are bordering on endangered. I have not yet been able to find any reliable information about large scale successful captive breeding.

An informative article about the possible effects of the collection of P. denisonii: http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/jun252007/1671.pdf

Unfortunately it's not always easy for us to know the source and/or likely hood that our pets have been captive bred or taken from the wild. I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do, but I'm sure that there must be others who would find this kind of information helpful when deciding what fish to purchase.

look up cichlids through your university findit scheme, or web of science that kind of thing. I did a research project on hybridisation in cichlid stocks within the pet trade and in the wild, theres plenty on that :>
