Its a long story, but I am being given a working but very dirty 29 US gallon tank. There were some fish hiding behind the rock, so I'm not entirely sure on the numbers, but it looks like I have 2 longfin danios, 2 fruit loop tetras (dyed blue and pink  ), and about 4 3-inch goldfish.

I will need to do something about the goldfish, because I don't have any tanks big enough for them. I don't have any good lfs around here, so thats a last resort. The nearby church has a pond, but it is already overstocked because the goldfish have bred like crazy. I don't know of anyone who would have a big enough tank for them, or a pond. So should I give them to a pet store to go as feeders (really don't want to do that!), put them in the overstocked church pond, or what?

My dad has a 30 gallon with 7 serpae tetras in it. Could the danios go in with them, if I add a couple danio friends? What about the fruit loop tetras? I don't know the 'real' name of the tetras, I just think I remember seeing the dyed ones called fruit loop tetras. Do they need to be in groups (though obviously I won't buy the dyed kind)?

What kind of goldfish are they? I'm assuming they are commons/comets, so they will need a pond. Post an add in your local newspaper or on the internet and I'm sure you will find many people with ponds, as a last resort your church's pond may be an option, doesn't sound too good if its overstocked though.

And yes, the danios can go with your dad's fish, same with the dyed white-skirt tetras, both are schooling fish so it would be great if you could bring their numbers up to about 6. And with the painted ones, get either some black skirts or white skirts, the blacks are just a color morth and they will all school together.

Good job on rescueing the fish!

Some of the first fish I ever kept - as is the case with most people I'd imagine - were goldfish. When I got into tropicals, I remembered how endearing they were at the time and decided to try breeding them. Like you, I didn't have large tanks avaialable and couldn't afford any either...

So I bought myself large plastic storage boxes, added filters, and kept the goldies in there. I didn't keep them for long, TBH as I switched quite decisivly over to gouramies :p - but I still use storage boxes like those for raising fry to maturity. They are very cheap and you can get very large ones. As long as they are 'food safe', they are also fish safe. The only thing you'll need is a filter. Take a measuring tape with you and try to find something that holds at least 40 gallons for the 4 goldies (if they are fancies) and at least 50 if they are commons/comets.

The larger the better but, of course, a plastic storage box isn't really the most attractive container so you need to have somewhere to put it :p Actually, with goldfish, it's similar to actually having an indoor pond ;) I put potted plants around mine in long rectangular ceramic pots and used brownish gravel and it actually looked quite appealing.

With the goldfish, you can always try rehoming them on this forum on the buy/sell section  .
Edit: where abouts do you live?

Thank you everyone for the imput. :)

I don't have the room anywhere for an indoor pond, even if it was just the minimum requirements for them. I think I will keep the danios, either in my dads tank, or incorporate a school of them in my stocking for the 29 gallon. I found a home for the tetras with a person on a different forum I go to.

There is a person who would like one of the goldies to put with her two fantail goldfish in a 50 gallon- would that be overstocked if the fish is a common/comet? (I will have pictures soon, and then we will know for sure!)

I am in Florida. :)

i had fancys and commons and the commons attacked and killed them  don't know if it was there personality or what but they were horrible thing
