Naming Your Fish

ok at what point do you draw th line for naming your fish?

Ive named:

the dwarf gouramis
the african dwarf frogs
the betta
the loaches.

ive not named the zebra danios or the neon & flame tetras. not least for lack of individuality, but if i could find easy to spot differences, theyd be too flaming fast to spot it lol.

I'd draw the line same place as you; I don't plan to name the tetras I'm getting later this year, but probably will name the gouramis. My guppies and platies all have names, except the three youngest, whom I thought I might give away. Cories are a sort of halfway house, 3 of them have the same name. Thought tbh it's not me who gets to decide but the kids most of the time. The shrimps have not got names.

Of course all the plecs have names (Nessie, Malcolm, Scott, Bonnie & Clyde, Katherine and Spencer)
Derrick the Prawn does.
Most of the Koi have names (Big Boy, Silver, The Bish Brothers etc)

One of our apple snails is called Nail (son's choice), one of our bronze cories is called Durb.

humm, nothing smaller really has a name.

I name a select few, then I call all the other ones george.

I name all of my fish but I side step the problem when it comes to things like my tetras and corys, I give them a group name as in "clan of xymox" or "tactical sekt" because it sounds fun really haha

(Although, I can actually tell the difference between my individual tetras and corys, but that's because i dont have too many and I spend farrrrrrr too much time looking at them instead of working )

Ive named all my fish cept the new platies and my guppie fry. But then again all i have is livebearers and bettas :]

I name my individual fish, but rarely name my shoaling fish.

I once named a colony of Ghost Shrimps "Past", because it amused me.

I have just named one of my apple snails, but only one, and I have 5 (In seperate tanks). His name is Waffle House.

"That thar's the waffle house. Veeery small waffles. Yep."

I draw the line at when i reach over 20 fish.

I do usually name them all but what I do with the "group" fish like tetras is name them after another group or something with the appropriate number. I once had three white clouds named Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. When one died I would replace it and still have Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Once I'm sure that my 29g is thoroughly over Ich I plan to get 12 neons and they'll be the Disciples. I haven't figured out what to name my corys once I have six again.

hercules the oscar,
wiggles the BGK,
sticky the giant common plec

and then a couple of my african cichlids are mr attitude and mr poopsalot lol.


oh and a goldfish called frank.

I name my fish if I can think of a decent name, everything else is called Eric or Erica, family tradition my dad did the same with his fish

My plec is called Plec, the betta is called Asbo, the red tailed black shark is called Son of Jaws (unfortunately Jaws passed away last year!).

All of the other fish I collectively call Boys and Girls.
