I love crayfish. When i was younger i always had crayfish so they have sentimental value to me. So i would like a tank with a blue crayfish. However, they dont make good tankmates. They eat anything they catch. But what if i have a tall tank and fill it with surface dwellers. Because i also want hatchetfish, i find them interesting. Theoretically, if my crayfish stays on bottom and my hatchetfish stay on top they wont interfere with each other.
Would this work?

It would be possible, but you would have to have a lot of plants, as the hatchet fish would still swim to the bottom. And if the tank is too tall, the footprint wouldn't be big enough for the crayfish. You would also have to keep stocking low due to the lower oxygen level of a tall tank.

In my opinion, they just don't work well together.

Even surface dwelling fish still go to the bottom quite often. It's undoable IMO.

Hatchet fish, which I also love, need some cover to avoid them getting spooked and jumping. Floating plants or, if particular set-up allows, over-hanging plants.

bear in mind that crayfish can and will climb, and will hang off things or even launch themselves off to catch prey if they're hungry enough.

Our electric blue crayfish only has low-level rocks as decor but can still climb the silicone and get right on top of the filter.
