Hi to all, am new to this forum and to keeping tropical fish. Basically, im going to be moving my 5ft tank in to another room, it has about 25 fish in it and im guessing its gna have to be emptied as it ways a ton. How do i go about it? how long can the fish stay out of the tank and in a bucket or something? im going to moving it at about 7 tonight so ne help would be well appreciated.

I moved my tank a while ago, I put all the fish in to buckets and moved it set it up again et and it took me about 3 hours to do, but most of the time was catched the fish!!! in the first place, all my fish survived and showed no ill effects.

Hope this helps

Hi,

You need to empty the tank water out and fill a bucket with the fish in it. Remove the gravel as this will be very heavy in a 5ft long tank.

What i did was take the heater and put it in the bucket as the water will cool very quickly. This helps keep the fish in the same temp water so reduces shock of the change. Put a few ornaments in the bucket to give the fish something to hide around and give them security. I also put a plant over the top of the bucket to add a sense of security for the fish.

Then move everything. Rinsing the tank would be a good thing at this stage. Put gravel back in....get a mix of hot and cold water back into the tank ...judge the temp roughly as it will reduce the time it takes to get the temp correct again. make sure you de-chlorinate the water in the tank. Add your filter, etc.

Then when the water temp is ok and filter up and running put the bucket of water and fish back into the tank

Thats the way i did it and it seemed fine

thanks for that guys, its a 5ft tank tho, not a 7 ft. will let u guys know how i get on. thanks again

I moved a tank the other day and what rsands said is mostly what I did. It worked out fine. The main difference was I was able to move most of my water from one tank to the next and fill it with the difference from stored water.

hi guys, managed to save around 125 litres of the old water, ive kept the sponge part of the filter in water with the plastic plants, do i do anything to the carbon part of the filter?

also, do i wash the gravel or not?

thanks

The carbon? Toss it. :p What you want is the sponge part of the filter. It has all the bacteria in it. The carbon just cleans up some of the excess waste for a few days to weeks then stops functioning. Don't worry about washing the gravel unless it is really dirty. No matter how much you do clean it, it will still cause some discoloration of the water until it settles.

carbon isn't needed. as said it wears out after a bit. you could rinse the gravel but dont be scrubbing at it.
you could leave the carbon in for a few days though to help clear the water, etc
