I was just doing my tank maintenance and noticed something cotton wool like on one of my Bedotia geayi's (Madagascar Rainbows) mouth, it's swimming about fine, and eating, but it's mouth is slightly open permanently.

I'm personally thinking it's mouth rot or something similar and was looking at treating with Interpet No 8, Anti-Fungus & Finrot. I would quarantine it but don't have a separate tank at the moment as it got smashed. Anyhow, I'll post my stats in maybe 30mins or so, as I've literally just finished filling my tank. I only have a small quantity of Interpet 8, so i'd have to wait till tomorrow to get some more. I was just wondering what others thought. There's a couple of pictures below but they are not brilliant as the fish wouldn't stay still.

Thanks

Just done some tests, nothing unusual, but I have just done a 50% water change:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 10
PH: 7.6

Rainbows are prone, unfortunately, especially if water quality dips even slightly, not saying yours has though. You really need to be doing 2 x 40% (and upwards) water changes with rainbows or you will find this happens.

You need pimafix and myxazin, used together, also depending on your temperature, lower it to 23/24c, increase aeration and dont be tempted to overdose the myxazin as it will knock your water stats.

I'm not sure if i'm going to be able to get those 2 meds today. The only shop near me with meds is pets at home. I'm not able to get to anywhere else. If I can't get pimafix and myxazin, what else would you suggest.

When you say myxazin will knock the water stats, will I be looking at a mini cycle.

Thanks, for the help.

So long as you dont overdose it wont effect your bacteria at all and you wont experience a mini-cycle.

To be honest, you can buy fungus meds anywhere, but the combination of the pimafix an myxazin are the best to use.

I was looking at some topics which say get a bacterial med, as mouthrot is bacterial. If this is the case, then i shouldn't use interpet no 9. I think I read by wilder somewhere that Interpet No 9 won't work

not sure if the finrot med any good on mouth fungus columnaris, even though it says it treats it.

thanks

Never used no9, so couldnt say, I just know that for mouth fungus/columnaris, that pimafix and myxazin are the best meds to use in combination with each other for it.

brilliant, many thanks for your help, much appreciated. If I can't get one or the other, i'll have a look for something similar.

Also, before I put the meds in, I was thinking of maybe a small 20% water change (even though i did 50% yesterday), as i'm probably not going to be able to do one for a least a week, just to keep the quality up for the Rainbows??

Always a good idea to have clean water and a w/c before meds will be fine, remember to remove carbon (if you have any). If you need to w/c in the course, just add the amount for the water you have removed, that way you wont effect the course.

I got the Myxazin from a small pet store but no Pimafix, so I'll have to hope this treats the problem.

Thanks again for the help.
