Hi,just went to shirley aquatics and found mountain shrimp ,they are really big ,about 4 inches long at least ,does anybody keep them or know anything about them?

They are Bamboo shrimp. Also called by these names: flower, mountain, wood, singapore, fan. They are my favourite shrimp. They tend to hang out by the current where they grab small particulate matter with their "fans" and eat it. They require either an established tank or food supplement(I used ground up spirulina and swished it in the water) until the tank was mature and there were plenty of "things" they could filter out of the water. They are very peaceful and can be kept with any other peaceful shrimp. They will NOT eat baby shrimp or fry, unless one happens to land on an open fan! They can be kept with large fish such as Pearl Gourami and Betta and will not be bothered. They get very large, my males are 3.5 inches long! They can change their colour at any time according to their mood or back round they are sitting on. For instance, they turn dark brown when sitting on drift wood and they turn black when they sit on my black heater. They also turn bright red and orange or can look slightly grey or blue as well. They will "fight" each other for the best current flow and I find that my big males usually get their way, lol.

I`M fascinated by them,at the moment i`ve got corries ,pitbull pleco ,glowlight tetrs and 3 armano shrimp, would they eat these? And also is there anywhere else in Birmingham or near to that sells them,as shirley is a long way for me,also can you just keep one ?

I manage to get 4 for £16 which is much cheaper than my nearest MA. They are safe with what you've got. They are fairly big so I guess unless you have a cichlid they would be fine. They are fine by themselves as well. Same with amano shrimp. They (amano) don't hunt in packs... it's just that you are more likely to see them if you have lots as they like hiding. The bamboo shrimps are pretty brave souls (mine are anyway) and does venture out in the open. I've only had them for a day and they are fun to watch.

All your fish/shrimp will leave them alone except I cannot comment on the pleco. I've never had one so I don't know. Yes, you can keep just one but you will want more than one, trust me. Shrimp don't produce much waste, so they don't add much to the bioload. Feel free to have more than one.
