I was wondering what you think the most unappreciated tropical fish are.

Now I am not looking for monsters just fish that most people can fit into their aquariums. The fish that are almost perfect but yet nobody seems to keep them. Pictures would be good

Anyway I am going to start with the Celebes rainbow. They are just brilliant fish they are peaceful and when they hit the light the colours that come off them are brilliant, They swim at all levels and just generally make a stunning addition to the aquarium.

The picture in no way does them justice :good:

Well, I'd say killifish win.
They are peaceful, active, don't get big and very colourful.

Or possibly halfbeaks.

The merry widow (phallichthys amates). Lovely little fish, active, inquisitive, peaceful and with a lovely cheeky appearance and beautiful irridescence in the right light. They would be great for a 15 gallon tank, which is what lots of people seem to have these days. But just because they don't come in gaudy colours nobody seems to stock them (which rather begs the question why do they stock all those black and white tetras?).

Porthole livebearers (poeciliopsis gracilis), too, friendly, hardy, unfussy about water parameters and brilliant swimmers. Nice silvery sheen to their bodies.

Will add pictures if my husband ever gets round to connecting the bits. And if I manage to take a picture of my widow.

Nice topic this btw, as it gives people a chance to share little known gems.

Only problem is getting them to hatch or having a successful batch. Sometimes it's a crap-shoot if you get anything viable.

Really? Do you think these kits off ebay are a bit dodgy maybe? I'm planning on raising some soon...so yeah, that could out me off these kits  .

No, not dodgy exactly but sometimes you just don't get anything viable (unfertlized or improperly stored/shipped eggs) and sometimes you can get an explosion of fry (far more than you expected to take care of). I haven't kept them yet but I've been researching the best way to do it and you do run the risk of getting a batch of bad or dried out eggs sometimes. Your best option is to find a seller who is reliable and has a good rating. I've seen several on Aquabid that I might take a crack at and I think they also sell on e-Bay.

Rosy Reds dude, they get fed to Oscars, not too appreciated for the charming lil' guys they are. I have one left after the betta fiasco resulting in the dead of said Pimephales promeles. I however have moved my betta to a 2 gallon hex to prevent any further complications from Tatsu's nasty nature. I guess naming him after a dragon was appropriate!
