Ok Im in need of setting up my new tank and the filter i have looks to be a wierd setup. it has 1 sponge. some thin nylon noodles and boichem balls in the rest of the compartments. I also go a small filter with it and its all biochem balls this to me seems odd.

working on 3 or 4 compartments on which you can split a compartment in to 2 secttions with ease

Please either tell us your setup or what is a prefered setup. I feel this would help me and many others.

My thoughts are(bottom to top): (For an xp3 filter)

I would have Ceramic balls/rings in the bottom with a large sponge on top
some type of large surface area balls or similar for Bio filtration
smaller sponge with as much floss on top as will fit.

It all depends on the direction of flow. I always have sponges and filter floss and other mechanical filtration elements first to trap any detritus. After this will be the biological media and then back to the tank.
