Saw one in my LFS today and wondered if anyone had any experience with them, I've kept GSP's and DPP's before but was thinking about one of these Mbu's only thing is I wanna know everthing about them first as it was up for £95.

They get huge, so start planning for at least an 8-10ft tank with about 4-5ft in depth. Also they are freshwater puffers not brackish

If we're being entirely accurate here, according to Fishbase Tetraodon mbu is found in freshwater and brackish water habitats. But so far as I know, brackish water habitats are only a minor part of this adaptable species' ecological range, which includes both soft water rivers and hard water lakes.

With this said, Dark Entity is spot-on with regard to aquarium size requirements. Tetraodon mbu is extremely difficult to house adequately, and the majority of specimens end up either dead or passed on to zoos for rehoming. One article published in TFH a couple of years back made a very good argument for tanks around 1000 gallons in capacity.

If you want a big puffer, something like Tetraodon lineatus would be far easier to home, being perfectly happy in something around 150-200 gallons.

Cheers, Neale
