Yes you most certainly can ask any lfs for some. Whether they give you any or not, is for them to decide.

My lfs sells it for $5.00 for a square foam thing. I think it is worth asking. After all, it's their job to answer your questions right?

True, so just walk up to a guy that works there and just say, "Can I have some of your filter media from your tanks to put in mine?"

If the Petsmart near you has fire bellied toads and red clawed crabs they should have the little fluval filters in with them. Ask if you can have a small piece of the filter floss from that if they use the loose floss. If they use the little foam pads I wouldn't doubt they would refuse as those things are expensive. Or if they have a freestanding tank for koi like the store I work at does ask if you can have a piece of filter media from there. Don't get offended if they refuse though. In our koi tank the media gets kind of disgusting and is not that easy to access. The main system runs without anything resembling filter media that is possible to get too. You could get a piece of pre filter but it would have only been in contact with the system water for a day. Media from an iso tank filter is also possible but you get to decide yourself if you want media from a tank that only houses sick, beaten up, or parasite infected fish. I wouldn't take it myself. You could also ask them where any local fish specialty stores are. If they're as into fish as most of the people in my department are they'll know where all the ones within an hours drive are. I'm headed out tomorrow to one I haven't been to yet that my manager told me about.

I just went up to Petco and asked for some, they gave me some pre-filter, but she said that it was time for it to be changed and she acted like it hasnt been changed in a while, but hey, it's better than nothing.

Watch out for parasites with Petco stuff. Petsmart has isolation tanks in back where fish can be taken out of the main system if they are sick or have parasites. Petco doesn't and the one near me keeps getting in anchorworm and ich infected fish from their supplier.

I just took out the pre-filter from Petco.
