hey all, went into my lfs today and they had a few nano and pico marine tanks set up and its made me think that id like to start a marine tank.

i was thinking of starting small maybe the microhabitat 30 litre looks like a nice tank and everything is hidden behind the background . what i was thinking is that it would be a good place to start with just some corals and a few shrimp and maybe one CHEAP marine fish so that i can get used to everything that goes with a marine tank rather than a tropical tank

one question i have and its going to sound stupid they have moonight bulbs in does that mean that the lights stay on at all times??

Please do more reading before you jump into marine systems. I don't mean to sound harsh, but a lot of the all-in-one tanks have to have some modifications made in order be made suitable for keeping marine organisms healthy and happy for an extended length of time. Smaller reef system, like 30l are also much, much, much more difficult to maintain long term. I suggest that if you really want to go Marine, you start off with a larger tank. It'll be more forgiving and you'll have more options for stocking.

That being said, I've got two marine systems roughly that size, but I've got a lot of years in FW under my belt. If you'd like, check out our resource center. There's a link to it in my signature. MARC.

dont worry im no where near ready to start yet its just got me thinking id like to give it a try. space is one of my main concerns ive already got a tropical tank thats set up and takes up alot of my space but i was thinking one of these would be a great bedroom or living room addition i am not worried about keeping to many fish in this sort of tank. i saw a goby today (cant remember the name of it) and it was so beautiful i thought that would be all that i want plus maybe a few shrimps etc and trust me when i say adding fish would be a while off maybe even a year or 2 lets make sure i can keep A coral alive first

Gobies will need a tank with a good lid. In which case, an all-in-one tank is going to at least give you that. I've got a biocube. Again, read through MARC and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here, or even PM me.

Ok I found out today it wasn't a goby that I saw it was a dragonet which are aparently notoriously hard to keep so that is a definite nono but I like the little gobies or even just a single small fish of some kind. I am currently looking to do a nano tropical set up first to give me a little idea of the difficulty a small tank holds. It will be the same size as the marine 30l just with the safety that comes with knowing a bit about tropical.

Thanks for the advice it's defo something I'm going to do I shall probably wait till after the summer when I'm not so busy with work to start a marine which gives me lots of time to start reading up on it
