about a week ago i got 4 marble hatchets. the lfs man told me they eat flakes, but another site said that they were carnivores. WHICH IS IT?? and any other info would help. they dont look like they are going to die either sooo...

It's best to check multiple sources (esp. websites).

They are definitely carniviores, though they might be somewhat partial ton vegetable matter.

I'd suggest getting blood worms, brine shrimp, and vestigial winged fruit flies. You could also chop of seafood and earthworms.

My hatchets eat flake, but sometimes I give them live wing-less fruit flys.

You might have better luck with this question in the characins section. :)

And, unfortunately, we don't have the power to move it.

By the way, are they not accepting flakes or have you not tried?

Other info: Make sure the lid is tight-fitting and heavy and that you don't leave room for the fish to jump out, because they are built to "fly" over short distances.

o no they are doing fine...going strong after a week. i just wanted to do what was best for the fish ;)

As it says on the link above they prefer live/frozen foods but will eventually except flakes. But the bulk of their diet should be frozen or live foods or freeze dried foods which mine prefer as they float.

I don't have marble but have silver hatchetfish.
And I know they like fruits fly, I got wingless fruits fly for my convinience. :D
Don't want them grow back wing and buzz around the room.
And finally found the pure culture of it and I intend to keep that way.
Anyway, about the food for the hatchet. They do prefer live food since that is what they ieat in their habitat. So small insect like fruits fly, some small but not too small living thing in the water like mosquito lava. I think they can catch Daphnia or brine shrimp also. Although my greedy lemon catch most of them if not all before hatch can, so I'm not really sure. I may need to move those lemon some day.
M y hatch would eat some chunk of beef heart mix gladly. Also take some floating flakes since I didn't have fruits fly culture until recently. I never tried the frozen stuff but I imagine they do. If they are hungry and getting used to other non-live food.
But they do prefer the live food since that what they eat in nature. So get some live food culture if you want what best for them. Especially fruits fly would be good. Wing or WINGLESS your choice.
