Martin Strel a slovenian man is swimming the 3000 odd mile's of the amazon river.
Many people's first reaction to this would be what about the Pirahna, crocodile's etc. Well he will have support boats behind him in area's dropping blood and meat into the water to distract the flesh eating fish. The man's worst fear is the candiru because it is attracted by urine and swim's into the orifice's of it's prey eating it from the inside out, He will attempt to avoid this via a wet suit and cream. This swim will break the world record of his own swim in length. The swim's information can be seen at www.amazonswim.com. Fascinating yarn this... pure insanity at the same time.

argh, i hate hearing about any kind of parasite that can enter you while urinating in open water

Lol, when I heard about this, the candiru was the first thing that popped into my mind too . Especially since watching a program about them on TV where they demonstrated just how many were in there by pouring lots of blood into the water. Immediately they saw at least 5.
They also mey up with various victims and heard their stories....not very nice at all....

Hrm, they have a saying down there that "the river can kill you in a thousand ways." Definitely not an undertaking I would want to partake in, swimming the Amazon like that. Oh well, in the least it will certainly be interesting.

Exactly what I was thinking Sf05. I think it's a pretty stupid idea in fact, a possible feeding frenzy behind him as he swims, sure that will be fun.

It will certainly give him an incentive to keep swimming fast

What a waste... He could bring back all the Trichomycteridae that go for him and sell them to me... I'd buy them. If they were alive, of course.

He's swimming down river, right? Then couldn't all the stuff they pour behind them just flow down the river past him? Also, I'd think it would disrupt the wildlife if a huge amount of blood or something was poured into somewhere.
