males with no females

I have been informed by lfs that in a malawi set up if you do not keep females in the tank their will be less agresion as long as you dont have two of the same species in their is this true??????????

i think he is right but :/ we need an expert

i guess the aggression wouldn't be as bad for the males but females do get attacked.
 
okay I know this is going to be a stupid question but since this is the first time that I have kept lake malawi cichlids how do you tell the difference between a male and a female? I am assuming that it is similar to the differences between males and females of the south american cichlids in that the dorsal fins of the males or more pointed.
 
it seems to depend on what you are keeping. For example Melanchromis auratis is yellow and black in jeuvenile and female form but turns black when it matures and starts breeding your lfs should tell u.
