All the posts I've read have to do mostly with breeding. Therefore it's good to have 1 male and 2 or 3 females. What if I just want some color in the tank? Is it ok to have 3 or 4 male swordtails of different color in the tank or do they need females to keep them in line?

Thanks

you're better off with more females then males becuase if you only have 1 female and 3 males, then all the males will fight with each other. there will be casualties. by the way, becareful of the male swordtail, they jump out of the tank even if the whole is the same size as the fish. it dried up and died.

Having just male swordtails is ok. Though they will occasionally fight, having a large tank is good so they have enough room to run away and hide. Having only males will cut off breeding which can be a relief.
