i've seen 3 males in my LFS, wondering if they can only breed with female lyretails or normal female guppies would do

Lyretails are just a breed, like dog breeds, and can mate with any female guppy. If you are trying to keep the lyretail in the offspring its probably best to try breed only with female lyretails.

oh okay.. pity they didn't have any females or i would have gotten.. =(... they look really brilliant.. nice colours

Sorry to tell you Josh, thats what usually happens with not so common gups or any other type of rare fish.Sometimes the breeders hold on to their females ,that way they have control of price.I am not saying thats what happened here but, just a thought.
If you really want to get some of the females, ask your lfs' owner,he might special order a bunch of those ladies.

i know thats true but my male baloon dosent chase my double tail mollies?

Josh

if you get a Lyretail male you can then breed more of them from any female guppy.

Get the plainest strongest VIRGIN grey female you can find, breed her to your male.

Grow out the fry keeping the sexes seperate as soon as you can tell the difference.

At about 3 months pick the best females and breed them back to the original male.

You should have some Lyretails in the next lot of fry.

good luck

Colin
