confusion

I have started keeping GBR's recently. I understand that they like soft water, which I understand to mean GH<60ppm. My GH is 80ppm. I have been considering buying some water softener pillows for my filters, but I am looking for some confirmation that they actually work. Has anyone used anything like this before, and do they work?
