Two days into our fishy adventure, and I've lost one already ! There were six Zebra Danios in there a couple of hours ago, and then, only five.

I took out the five - into a bucket, with about 4 litres of tank water, and the ornaments - 2 (plastic) plants, a "rock" and a stick.

I searched the heater/filter/pump housing which is glued to the inside wall of the tank - maybe he jumped in there - nothing.

Underneath this housing is a gap above the tank floor, so I carefully moved the substrate out from there. Nothing.

I can only think that he's got himself trapped in the substate somewhere ! The substrate is some volcanic looking substance, we liked the colour of. But the chunks are about 1cm. Since Saturday, when we put them in there, we've noticed them digging around in it quite a bit

:

I just went to have another look, and to check the others. And, since the tank is clearing now from my stirring up the debris, I put the ornamants back in, and

ARGH ! I found him. Well, kind of. There are six in the bucket. Good grief.

I had more or less lost hope, and was writing to ask either (a) how much stirred-up sediment can little gills stand or (b) how long can little fish last in a bucket with about 4 litres of water ? Basically, can or should I put the fish back in the tank now ? Or wait until the water is clear ?

I guess I could save my blushes, and not post this, but, for those of you new to this game, my advice is, "try not to panic". And, don't put ornaments in the bucket, until you've got all the fish out of the tank.

Add them back to the tank.
Add more filter floss to the filter to help remove fine particles.
Glad you found him.
