I have just rescued 2 common plecos from the most awful conditions  They were in a tank 24" x 18" x 18". There were at least 10 goldfish and these 2 commons in the tank   He was running a fluval 2 (runs at 400 litres per hour).

2 of the goldfish were at least 6-7 inches long and the others were probably 3 inches minimum. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. This man is a client of my OH's and when OH went round to do an appointment 2 weeks ago he mentioned my new tank and this man said I could have those '2 damn plecos'

I dread to think of the levels of his water - it must be filthy

Anyway - I digress in anger - When I first put the lights back on one of these plecs looked very odd - he looked like he had patches of white mould on him and he was really breathing heavily. I dont have a hospital tank - its on my to do list for first thing tomorrow and I was very concerned about my other fish. But have just checked him and most of the pale patches have gone - could it have been stress and now he is in clean water he feels better? He is very active - much more active than the other one - mooching about - looks like he's checking out his new pad

Also I would like to give him a bit of cucumber and I have some weights but my tank is 24" deep and I wont be able to get the weight out again - is it ok to tie some cotton thread on it so I cn remove it later or will the other fishes (danios and rasboras) hurt themselves on it?

Sorry for all the questions and the rant but my entry into fish keeping had been so controlled until tonight

Hm i wouldn't advise using cotton thread as i can just see the plecos getting tangled up in that stuff as they will move around a lot while eating.
I would advise just getting something to stand on so you can retrieve the weights from the tank, i'm only 5'6 tall but i can just about reach (with something like a spoon) the back of my 2ft high tanks on their 3ft high stands as long as i stand on a box  .

Is the guy looking to rehome any of his goldfish do you know? If they are not fancy goldfish, depending on where the guy lives, i could adopt his goldfish from his tank of horrors  .

Yeh, you don't want fish getting tangled up in that.

umm... iunno bout plecos but i know it took a matter of minutes for my rtbs to get his color back when being rehomed so that is a possability.
