As it says above really need some help My Granddad has a 3 1/2 ft tank that is severely overstocked and he has it stocked with goldfish . That i can remember he has 7 goldfish/fancy's in the tank one of them is 7 1/2 inches ! he also has 2 catfish of some sort in there as well

Before i got into fish keeping i just thought it was a nice tank but now i know more i keep nagging him to re home them to his big pond in the garden .

Was looking in the tank the other day while i was there and one of the fancy tails seems to have a problem with it's swim bladder can't swim straight lies on it's back in the plants i told him there and then to get clove oil and put it out of it's misery . Phoned last night and it's still in the tank !

so first off Where can i buy clove oil ?

he also has one other fancy tail that has no eye which again he didn't notice !Can This live normally ? and one of the marbled goldfish has a very large abscess on it's head. Will the fish be in pain ? it swims and eats fine

I'm going to go to the house and anesthetize the one thats swimming upside down should i do the same with the one with the abscess ?

Also is it too cold to be moving the rest of them into the pond ? Or if i climitize properly would they be ok ?

Any Advice would be great and please don't flame me and tell me it's overstocked etc ...i know that ! i'm tryin to help my granddad out here so help only

I'll try to help...The fish with one eye can live normally. The fish with swim bladder problems should probably not be euthanized, as it is not painful. Fish with abcess need medication. I'm not sure if your Granddad has a test kit, but the readings for Ammonia, Nitrites, and Nitrates would be helpful. You could do a water change (maybe 30%) when you visit, just in case...

reply please :good:

The underlying problem is obviously the overstocking which is no doubt leading to water quality problems,
regardless of whether or not this is the case, as Sharon states a precautionary water change of 30% will help,

swim bladder or bloat is often caused when poor quality flake food is fed to species that have a weakened swim bladder i.e. fancy goldfish,
get your grandad to feed the fish frozen Daphnia and deshelled peas twice weekly and to cut down on feeding flake.

Is the absess a clear bubble with liquid under the surface,? these are often caused when the fish gets a wound and then this becomes infected,

I would personally treat the tank with an antibacterial treatment and get some water stats asap,

what are the catfish? do you mean loach as some of these attempt to eat the eyes of slow moving fish.

I've just phoned him and he is going to do as big a water change as he can manage . His health is deteriorating and he's nto able to look after them to his full capacity but it's his only hobby at the moment

The fish that swims upside down has been like this for around 2 weeks and it doesn't eat with the rest of the fish . I Will tell him to get his butt to lfs and get frozen daphnia and about the pea's too

The abscess is very large and a light pink in colour it say it is about the same circumference as a round cuff-link and is raised about 1cm of the fish' head

The catfish may be a chain loach or a sucking loach

my sister is going to take some pictures for me and e-mail me them so i'll get them up as soon as i receive them

and my granda does not have testing kits and i only have the strips as i tend to use my bf's API ones and can't get them til monday

[For the bloated Goldfish]
Don't kill him! Move him away from the others if you can and put him into a tank on his own. Lower the water level if you need to and feed him his usual diet. Check the flakes your grandad feeds them are not past their expiry date as this can cause problems. A varied diet also helps, Flakes, Pellets, bloodworms and deshelled peas are all good enough.

Pellets at this time might be easier for the goldfish to eat if its having trouble reaching the surface.

Good luck and hope he recovers!

If you want to get rid of some fish check your local fish store, they might be able to take some off your hands or find someone who wants them or even advertise them for you. If your grandads own pond will be too full when you do move the goldfish then ask a neighbour or friend to take some off your hands as pets or to put in their ponds when the weather gets warmer.

Keep an eye on water stats and good luck :good:
