When I started my tank (120litre) 3 months ago I was told by my LFS 2 clown loach would be fine for my tank. They were dandy for a while then we have whitespot which covered them both, sadly I lost one  . I was concerned for this buddy but obviously had to clear the infection before getting another. He seemed fine, always out and eating etc.

I then got him a bud but then didn't see them ever!! i even had to check they were not dead and stuck somewhere. Anyway found the newbie dead a while later :-( Since his buds death my guy has now been out all the time, swimming and eating etc.

I know they should be in a 3 at least but I now know would be too much for my tank, but I have space for 1 more (??) but since I never saw him when I got him a bud I dont know if he is happier now or when he has his friend. I honestly never saw them, not even at food times. He is out now, could it be that he is looking for a bud or just getting on??

I love him so much, he has defied death himself and a real funny chap but want him to be happy. I have been offered to give him back to LFS but this worries me more.

Hope not too much waffle!

I suggest you find your solitary loach a good loach family to go and live with because your 120 isn't big enough for 1 let alone a group. They can grow to around 12 inches and are bulky fish! They also live a long time, I read somewhere that they live twice as long as a dog.

I feared that reply. I am ashamed I got the clowns without my own research, I totally trusted my small LFS who set me up from scratch. I then realsied she sold me a filter that was a bit small and now the lid they made me is swelling (oak vanner). I am cross with myself but didn't have reason to question, I thought they knew and cared about what they were doing.

I am a total creature freak so would need to know my lovely loach is going to a good home, how would I find one?? he is causing me heartbreak poor love.

try putting an add in the classifieds in here im sure if hes healthy someone will take him :good:

Clown loaches need a lot of space when the grow, BUT they do grown very slowly. If your planning to upgrade your tank in a couple of years time then they should be ok. I love my clown loaches and am upgrading my tank as they grow.

if you ever want to rehome him, i have 11 clowns atm in a 880lt tank, top price if your localish ofc. :D

Thanks for your replies. I bought this tank for my son for his 7th birthday (for us to do together), the tank is in his room. I have fallen big time for the whole thing, wish they were mine so I could remove spongebob and crew

I cannot upgrade but would love my own tank, but poss having an extension this year so prob wait til thats done to minimise disruption to the fish.

Boost - 11 loaches!! Wow, thats a home I would be happy to let him go to, I love him so much but want him to be happy. Where are you? I am in Hertfordshire.

Just to share - I have just done my first water change alone!! Might sound easy but previously needed hubby near by in case I panicked. Bought them a lovely rock too so they are very pleased too. ^_^

One question - I was advised add Bacteria to the water after a change (waterlife bactalife), is the bacteria still beneficial?? :fish:

There's no need to add the bacteria in a bottle for a couple reasons. One most of the time by the time you get the bottle the bacteria is already dead so all your doing is wasting your money. I suspect your LFS told you that if that's true there just trying to sell you something. Secondaly almost all you benfical bacteria is in your filter not your water so doing a water change will not affect your bacteria at all. So to sum it up no you don't need to add bacteria in a bottle after water changes

Funny, I have been talking to darling (yet non fishy) husband about an isolation tank, he remained quiet and I take that as a yes?!?

I am just under an hour from Bluewater, you close to le grande shopping centre?

im cambridgeshire, if your stuck and really want to rehome im sure we could work something out.

i dare bet tho but you will get a new tank, i started out with a little 2 foot tank and now have a 8ft in front room, 2 240lt and 1 180lt :D

You seem sorted, tbh.

Yes, the clown loach does need a group and yes, your tank is too small.

However, if you can accommodate a 6 foot tank and are serious about fishkeeping, he'll be able to hang on for a few months. Wouldn't recommend it, though.

Whatever you do with him, good luck.

perfect reason to buy a big tank :D

tell hubby you need it for the fishs welfair
