Compact Fluorescents work very well in a planted tank, and are probably the most popular type of lamp among those who have high-light planted tanks.

VHO bulbs, I don't know much about, but I do know that they have different pins than normal output fluorescents, so you'd need, at the least, different encaps. Probably a different ballast, too.

I don't know of anyone that sells a "ready to go" VHO strip light; but, I haven't really looked for them.

I am about to order up a 96 Watt 36 inch Compact Flourescent strip for my tank.... I found that the CoraLife/AquaLife ones were better priced than the All Glass versions, and you can get one that already had a freshwater spectrum bulb in it.

Where are you ordering from?

and you can get one that already had a freshwater spectrum bulb in it.

But the AGA strips (from DrsFosterSmith, at least) come with GE 9325's, which many plant people rave about.

Tough call.

You mean the GE 9325?

It's the one listed (but maybe not shown) in the very first link you gave in this thread. Notice in the drsfostersmith page, it says "Includes 9325°K bulb(s)."

If you're looking for more info on the bulb, you can go to GE's Lighting Catalog, and do a search for the bulb, using the following info:

The GE part numbers are 45851 (6-pack) and 45859 (bulk).

The description number, which many distributors use as a part number, is "F55BX/AR/FS 6PK" or F55BX/AR/FS/BULK.
