Lighting

I currently have my lights (standard juwel t5's) on for 10 hours a day, 5 hours at a time with a 2 hour siesta period in the middle. Is this too much, as I find I have a pretty substantial algae problem even thought I have quite a few fast growing plants, and my nitrates are <5ppm?

i dont know if this is true but the lights that i got came with a little booklet of information and it said to only leave the lights on for approximatley 8 hours a day. Again though, I have no idea if its true.
