Used an online tool that the wolf suggested in the suggestions forum, This bit caught my eye.

Recomended lighting: 239.52 To 311.37 Watts.

I only have 80 (two forty watt tubes), can i just get higher wattage bulbs? or do I have to refit the hood? Its a Fluval so the lights are built in and my plants are growing ok have one in the center that grows two new leaves on each stem a day, though dont see much growth in my java fern or columba.

Depend what you want to grow, id you stick to Java Ferns, Moss and crypts etc then you'll be ok.

If you want a densely planted tank with a carpet of plants in the foreground etc then ull need higher powerlighting.

Standard tubes are 10 watts per foot of length so whatevr tube you get it will be the same power.

Basically if you want high light u'll have to completly refit the hood or possibly buy a luminaire.

Its an expensive hobby having a planyed tank at first, lights will cost possibly £200 and ull need a co2 canister which is another £100!!
