Right all started way back when i first started (and joined TFF) i realised very quickly that i needed a larger tank so started saving my cash for one.
In about 1 and a half months i managed to collect enough cash woo go me.
But my mum said that i cant have it untill after my GCSEs (18 days left) which i was really pissed at but got on with it.
She then said to me today that because im going on holiday with my dad for two weeks to france i can't have it until after...

the problem i have is its 68 days away  :X and also wouldnt it be easier if i had the big tank?

because it would cycle within 50 days right? and wouldnt need to be cleaned as much as my small one does at 1-2 a week

anyone else think of any good reasons why i should have it sooner (no sooner then 18 days tho)

hi
good for you that you have saved up for your own bigger tank, it is true that a larger tank is more stable,
how are you going to cycle the tank? also because its your tank only you will know your fish if you stock before you go away is there any one to really monitor the fish for you and test water if needed?
i know its so tempting to get on with it but i would wait until you can give it your full attention, it would be awful if you were away and a fish illness was in your new tank .
good luck with what you decide to do, im about to leave mine for 2 weeks for the first time with some one who has never had fish so im putting the correct amount of feed in separate bags.
all the best donna
:)

thanks for the reply

well first it would be a cycle with the fish with the old filter material and some of the gravel,
my thoughts were the quicker they are in the larger tank (50gal ?!?) the better and its not like im leaving it straight a way theres 50 days between the origional date and the time i get back from france but i suppose its probibly better,

I figure you ought to wait until you're back from France to add the fish... cycling is incredibly stressful on your fish, and it'd just be plain out better to leave them in their current tank, which is cycled, before adding them to new surroundings without you being there to fix any problems. anyways, we can't force you to decide either way, it is your decision to make. Enjoy your trip!

you could add the new fish straight away with no problems if you wanted.

youd need to take the filter media out the old filter and put it in the new one. you could normally jus use the old filter in the new tank but i doubt a filter for a 4.5G will do much good in a bigger tank.

now aslong as you dont add any new fish for a few weeks after you get the old fish in then it will be fine.

it doesnt really matter there in more water, there biomass is still the same so the filter can still handle it.

i wasnt going to add any fish to it yet anyhow it was more for the sak that the faster the fish are in the bigger the tank because its getting very full one of my barbs has had like a growth spert and is like big,
but my mums suborn anyhow so it dont matter thanks anyway people

if your mum won't let you get the bigger tank before you go away just make sure to give your little tank a good clean before you go & don't be tempted to overfeed. this will help cut down on the waste so hopefully you fish will be ok till ya get back. is someone staying to look after your fish ?? if so start showing them now how to do it properly & that will also put your mind at ease.
good luck & well done saving the money up so quickly :good:
oh yeah & enjoy your hols in france :D
