Bored into leaving
It was Friday the 13th, but unfazed I decided that with all my shiny new regulator parts and a full twinset, it was time to get it in the open water. Leybourne Water in Kent was chosen as a suitable muddy puddle reaching 8 metres.
As can be seen from the surface shots it was a fairly nice day; perfect for cooking in drysuits before getting in, especially as Steve (my buddy) was trying out his new Fourth Element undersuit.
We were told by a couple of divers just getting out that the viz was pretty bad. Going down it was not too bad when you were up close:
But get about 2 or 3 metres away...
Moving off, I think someone has managed to flood their engine:
In the shallows it looked quite nice
But if you finned the bottom (or dug into it with your hands like Steve did, not sure why as we were hunting pike which aren't renowned for hiding underneath the substrate) it soon got a bit nasty:
The bottom had a strange effect where the last metre or so was shrouded in a "mist". Our only potential thought was that maybe the earlier divers had kicked up the bottom and it was settling. Whatever, it was quite cool.
We found no pike, only some small shoals of fry and a couple of perch. Oh, and a dead eel:
I can only assume that the chavs beat us here
I managed to get another shot of Steve on a platform...
but he was pulling a pose so I moved back to get him all in and he faded off into the gloom. Thank god he had a bright yellow box on his back...
There was a huge amount of oxygenating weed growing throughout the lake, at times it was like swimming through a forest
Of course this growth did allow us to play hide and seek while clocking up our 60 minutes underwater
And a shot of me, shiny new regs, zeagle jacket and drysuit and all!
And the parting comment someone left for us informing us that this car was not an Italian supercar.
The dive went really well, everything worked fine. I did a couple of shut down drills nicley, so the next stop is the Farne Islands next Saturday for a week.
