Thinking about getting kuhli loaches at some point, as they are so weird and cool and useful. However, there's a gravel concern.
Our substrate is *gravel*, not sand (like the loaches prefer), but it's not that big, I think. It's actually three types of gravel mixed together--the biggest rocks are about maybe 1/3" long, and the smallest are maybe like 1/4" or even smaller. I don't think they are sharp, either, especially the bigger rocks, they are smooth and round-ish. The smaller stuff has some edges, but they are relatively smooth.
Is substrate like that okay for the loaches? Is it too big? I'm mostly afraid of them getting trapped under the rocks while they are digging for food, or cutting themselves. It seems like in descriptions of kuhli loaches the most emphasized point is that of them cutting themselves faster than an emo monkey with a razor blade on coarse sand or rocks, and that would be a sad fate.
