Hi everyone,
I tried posting this question in the African Cichlids section, but haven't recieved an answer. My fish were moved to a larger tank just under 3 weeks ago. Obviously they like it as my Kribensis have just had a load of fry. The question I have is, can I do anything to help them. Both parents are looking after the fry and none of the other fish in the tank are going near them. Am I best just leaving them alone, or is there anything that I should do to help. Any advice will be very welcome.
Many thanks
Ian

Before you let the adults raise them you need to find out if you can rehome them first. Most pet shops wont take them now as they breed so easily theres loads of them and they dont sell quickly. If you can get a pet shop to take the young then really just leave the parents to raise them. Do you have a spare tank? With some parents, they might eat the young or one will try to eat the young and you will get fights between the parents. Once they become free swimming and out with the parents you can take them away if you want to, or maybe take a few to raise in case the adults decide to eat them. They will easily take Baby Brine Shrimp and other ready made prepared food for fry, even really well crushed flake.

Thanks for that comprehensive answer Black Angel. I must admit, I am wondering what to do as I only have a small hexagonal tank which I can put them in and I have a feeling that they may outgrow it very quickly. Also, I don't want to end up with a species tank lol. I will have to think about what to do. However, I don't want to get rid of the babies if I can help it as it seems very cruel. I will have to enquire as to who would take them off my hands. He he, anyone want any Kribensis for their tanks.

I had the same problem when my kribs bred. i didnt look into where they would go and no one would take them. Luckily I asked when the parents first brought the young out and in the end only 6 survived which i still have. The problem is, now i have the 2 foot tank as a female only tank where i have 3 of them. The main 4 foot tank now has two adult males and 3 sub adult males and i cant add any other sand hugging fish or the kribs go for them. In the two foot tank any other fish i add get mercilessly torn to shreds so thats now a species only tank, which like you i never wanted.

my kribs breed, i didt have a other tank and now i feel bad and should of stopped it while i could. My advise would be, only carry on IF YOU HAVE A OTHER TANK>
