Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting a decent sized tank since my brother recently moved out and I now have quite a bit of extra space. I was looking at the Juwel rio 300 as it's a 4ft with extra width and depth and would give me better options when stocking.

I notice a lot of users on this board who have Juwel tanks choose to remove (or at least) supplement the standard Juwel filter in these tanks. Is there a reason for this other than aesthetics? Are they actually poor quality and need supplementing?

thanks in advance! :good:

It all depends on what you want to stock for a standard community tank there fine if your going for bigger messier fish ie. plecs an external filter is the way to go. By taking the internal out it makes a bit more room it also makes maintence easier as you dont have to disturb the fish as much

i was running a tetratec ex 700 on my rio 180 but due to it playing up (water bypassing the filter) i changed over to an eheim pro 2 2026 and touch wood its perfect imho worth the extra cost

I see, well I was thinking about going for some medium-sized American cichlids (Severum, Chocolate etc.) so I guess I probably would have to supplement it. I don't think I will initially, getting the tank alone is gonna broke me >_<

I might throw a fluval or eheim external on it if/when it can't cope, I work at a lps and get wholesale price on filters anyway heh.

When I ordered my juwel 400 I also heard about the filters not being up to the job. (see my post about a month ago). I started the hobby september 2006 and have always had fluval filters which I have found second to none. The tank arrived and I was dissapointed about the filter arrangement. However, that said, the power head on the filter is more than adequate, and the sponges are organised and simple to replace. The down side is it takes up alot of space in the tank, and if the juwel filter is over one side of the tank, which mine is, the opposite end seems neglected. I wasn't taking any chances, as I have green terrors, severum, jurupari and alot of large cichlids that I have reared from young, and didn't want to lose any. My only casualty in swapping over to an upgraded tank was a pictus. overall I find the filter arrangement fragile, but adequate. I have been told many times on this forum that over filtration is not a bad thing, so I added my Fluval 205, running the neglected end, and my water is CRYSTAL. In short, I would advise you to run 2 filters if you have the money / means to do so.

hope that helps

Rob

the filters are ok at filtering but are underrated for the tank , i removed mine because i didn't like the big ugly black vox in the corner

I've just aired on the side of caution and before even testing the internal filter i brought a 305 to supliment my Rio 240.
