Just A Little Salt?

hey so ive seen a bunch of fish that need salt in there water on my last lfs visit, mollys, freshwater flounder, exc. but if i have fish that dont need salt, can they still handly it? these fish would be like corys otos and tetra.

Most catfish (cories and ottos included) and tetras do not handle salt well. Those are mostly amazonian fish whose environment is acidic with very low amounts of dissolved minerals.

Mollies can go without salt though, especially if you have hard water.

The fish you note as needing salt either need (flounders) or do much better in (mollies) marine salt mix (the stuff for salt water aquariums). Adding this would make the water brackish which would kill fish like otos and tetras.

Just regular 'aquarium salt' is not in any way a substitute, and IMO is completely useless. The topic above explains quite a bit :).
 
ok thanks for the link, so i could get mollys, but no freshwater flouder, i think i can live
