Hi

I'm being woken by my pair of Oscars in the early hours of the morning by them splashing around and bashing off the hood. I do believe they could be fighting but the thing is it only happens at night in total darkness. If a switch on a light in the room the 'fighting' stops but if I switch the light off 30 mins later their start making a racket again.
This morning the smaller of the two had knocked himself out or was certanly in a daze as I had to hold him in the water for 1 min or so until he got his bearings. He was on his side floating like he was dead until I manged to hold him :/ Plus he has a 'L' mark from where his head hit the corner of the hood

Any idea why they only 'fight' at night and not during the day. They did the proper Oscar fighting in their smaller old tank (change colour and lock jaws) but everything has been fine since they moved into their 4ft tank, they have now been in this new tank for 3 months. They show no signs of aggression to each other during the day and this is the second time the night fight has happened. They are both approx 8" in size.
Maybe they sneak out at night for a pint or three when I'm sleeping, get him a little boozy and start fighting over who loves the Pleco more
Seriously though, any ideas why this happens at night?? I'll watch their behaviour during the day for signs of agression.
PS All water parameters are fine

Unfortunately even a 4 foot tank is not really enough for 2 grown Oscars.

yeh,how many gallons?that would help alot too

DD

oscars do that. They are just funny like that. They will just jump out if givin the chance. Where i work I was helpin a customer with some fish and one of the oscars ploped right down at my feet. As long as they have no wounds their fighting is not serious. just try weighing the hood down with some books or sumtin.

Its weird you would mention that, because I had the same problem today. My tiger oscar kept smashing into the roof, then would stare at the light for a bit. They are funny ones, these oscars. Gotta love em though. I just feed mine and he stops for a while.

Cheers.

I work at a LPS and I have to feed the baby albino oscars (so cute and only about 2 inches!) whenever I open the tank they jump out of the water at me. They especially get frisky when I dump the food in. I love them and wish I could have an albino oscar but my tank is only a 30 gal.
