Fiddler crabs are great pets, one of the first things ever that I kept. However, they aren't for fish tanks. I know they are often sold for them but that's not the right environment. They need land and if they don't get it they will leave the tank and of course not finding the mud flats they need they dry out and die. But, they are not fully aquatic crabs like a hermit crab either so they can't stay in the water indefinitely or they will drown. If you really love this crab and want to keep it then it can be successfully done in a species tank. I've seen some wonderful such tanks and kept a couple decent ones myself but there's an effort involved.

I still keep a trio of these myself though i should be expecting them to die out anytime soon.

Keep in mind that their average lifespan is about a year and most fish stores that sell them usually sells them out already as adults. Meaning, you should only expect them to live for a few months more.

Imitating the tides are very crucial for their well-being. A wave/tide simulating mechanism is i think available nowadays for brackish water setups for mudskippers and that could be used to keep them happy for a while.

Also avoid giving them pellets as food. Majority of fiddler crabs sold are wild-caught and will eat most prepared petfoods available that will shorten their lives drastically. Chopped boiled lettuce, rotten aquatic plants, baby food, pre-killed fish (not carp or goldfish), dead bugs are probably the best stuff to feed them while they're around.

Take it from someone who keeps and buys these crabs for my partner every 4 months :D

(These are pretty cheap where i'm at, 8 fiddlers for the price of $1 worth)

thanks guys! now i know all this i will consider keeping a fiddler crab in my 12 gallon tank as in january 4th i will be getting a 74 gallon tank!
