Don't get too excited, folks... no, there aren't eggs yet :p
I'm kinda glad about that, since I'm not really prepared to have two sets of fry at once right now, lol.

Anyway, when I was about to go to bed last night I noticed the pair wearing their spawning colours, then I saw the bubblenest... oh yeah, they were ready to get it on! :hey:
Apparently when I turned the lights off they cut it out, because when I got up to get a drink of water later I checked on them and they were back to normal... swimming together rather than chasing and flaring and all that romantic nonsense :p. Seeing them flare and posture was very special though.. they really are amazing fish!
Bad pics because the room light was already off and my camera doesn't like darkness.

They are soooo beautiful! Are they in a divided tank? In that one picture I can't tell.

Are their breeding traits any different than splendons? Where did you buy these lovelies?

No, they're not divided... they share a 10 gallon and get along famously. Until last night I had never seen any chasing or aggression between them, and today they're back to being perfect partners -- no ripped fins or anything :)

Their behaviour didn't look any different from splendens to me, except that the male was gentler (though he did give chase a couple of times)
I got them at the last betta show in Dallas put on by the Texas Betta Society, and I absolutely adore them :)

WOW! Is that common behavior with the imbellis? I think that is so sweet they can be kept together

PS: Just realized we are almost the same age, you are 4 days younger though! :p

Wow. I love their spawning colors. They are simply gorgeous.

With them behaving like that, you'll have eggs any day now! Whether you really want them or not. :)

I would think it's common... at the show all the wild pairs were being housed together. I was cautious about keeping them together at first since all my experience has been with splendens, but after a couple of days I realised how much they seem to enjoy one-another's company
Darn, you'll be able to legally purchase alcohol 4 days before me!!

Kiarra: Honestly, I would love to see them breed this early... it's reassuring to see them acting like this, it lets me know I'm doing right by them
The only thing is that, if they do breed soon, I'll have to start setting up tanks in the garage! Oh well, I have a couple of extra 10 gallons lying around and big plastic buckets are cheap at Walmart  :shifty:
We have a storage room in our garage that stays at a reasonable temperate (about 82 degrees) in the summer and fall, so I could raise fry there without worrying about heaters

A room that stays at 82 would be PERFECT for spawning and raising fry without heaters. You should really take advantage of that. ;)

Oh gosh, being in the same tank  Where have you been all my life, little imbellis'?!

If they have babies, I beg of you to send me a pair

On that note, how do the males do with other males?

I guess you can house multiple pairs together. Did a little research about them a while ago. They're SOOO mellow compared to Betta Splendens. Such adorable little guys.

I've read that you can house them together if you're careful about it... big enough tank and plenty of hiding places!

OMG Hyper Cute.

Goood Luck

Very cool bettas, Synirr!

What does a pair of imbellis usually go for?
I got mine for $20... they're pretty cheap.
What I'd REALLY like is a pair of Betta albimarginata, but at over $150 at pair, they're too rich for my blood

The pictures that you posted are marvelous. I have a tankfull of imbellis and they get along great. The only reason I ever separate them is when I want to spawn them. The reason for this is sometimes the juvies tend to eat their younger brothers.
