I have 5 bleeding heart tetras and 3 lemon tetras in a 30 gallon tank. One of the bleeding hearts hides inside one of the decorations most of the time. It came out today while I was counting them, and I noticed that the top half of it was a yellow-green color, like algae. along the bottom was a red line like it was bleeding or something. I also noticed another bleeding heart that looked kind of green on top.
The water parameters are normal, except nitrAte, which is a little higher than normal because I've been overfeeding. I have some trouble reading the results, but I'm pretty sure it's below 10ppm.
The NitrIte is 0, and Ammonia is between 0 and .25 ppm, definitely closer to 0.

I have a disease chart from Mardel, and according to that, my fish has dropsy. I did some research online, and I really don't think so. The fish doesn't appear to have raised scales or look like a pinecone. I also don't see any spots that might be ich or some other fungus.

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with my fish?? Also, how should I treat them??

If the fish has a line of red and it looks like it is bleeding beneath the skin it could be septicemia, hard to cure once it has progressed.

I'll start treating with Melafix. I suppose I should wait til it looks better to buy any more fish? I was planning to get some more this week since the store is having a sale.

What is septicemia? What is the best way to treat it, and is it contagious?

Thanks

Septicemia is blood posioning, and yes as the fish releases bacteria into the tank, can you issolate the fish.
plus do some daily water changes on the tank.

If not add maracyn one and two to the tank, good luck.

Maracyn
Manufacturer: Mardel
A broad-spectrum antibiotic for gram-positive bacterial infections. For infections of columnaris (body fungus), fin and tail rot, popeye, gill disease, and secondary infections.
Active ingredient: Erythromycin.

Maracyn–Two
Manufacturer: Mardel
A broad-spectrum antibiotic for internal or external gram negative bacterial infections which can even be absorbed through the skin. Effective treatment of fin and tail rot, popeye, gill disease, dropsy (swollen body, protruding scales), septicemia (bleeding or red streaks on the body), secondary and internal infections. Effective even when fish won't eat.
Active ingredient: Mincycline hydrochlor.

Thanks for the help. I have Maracyn, and will get some Maracyn 2 on Thursday when i go shopping.
As for quarantine, it's possible, but not likely to go over well with the rest of the family, especially since we really don't have space to set up the other tank. Maybe I'll look for a 5 Gal. at the store.

Thanks again for the help and advice!! :good: :D
