After speaking to a few different peeps and researching on the internet, i have added some salt to my Rio 180 cichlid Set-Up, as a "one off". Mostly to try and help out the Convict with the Coudy / Opaque eye http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=178232&hl=

However there is also a couple of fish with some "battle scars" so i thought it might act a kind of "tonic" also

The Situation in the tank is this

- Rio 180 (for those who dont know, thats 40x15x18 inch and 180 litre's)
- Standard Juwel Internal (600 litres per hour) and a Fluval 4+
- I never get any ammonia or nitrite readings in this tank, despite a diet thats contains quite a bit of protein at times
- I generally do a 35% water change every week without fail, and becuase i am borderline overstocked at moment, i am going to increase to 35% every 5-days
- Small / Medium Convicts (max 2.5 inch), 2x small(ish) Kribensis, 1x Geophagus and quite a few baby Midas, ranging from 3/4 inch to 2 inch. I also have a couple of Tangy's in there from my old Tangy Set-up, 4x Jade Eye Cichlids (small), 1x Juli Marleri and 3x Small Brichardi (1 inch). I know its a strange mix, but it actually works trust me, had it this way for over 6 months now i reckon
- I am about 10cm under the stocking guidelines advised by PFK and obviously with the midas growing every week, i will be taking steps to alleviate this ASAP

I have given ALL the details just in case it might help, if you want to comment on the set-up, go for it, but i am really interested in this...........................

Yesterday i added approx 150 grams of Marine Salt to the tank. This equates to about 1-gram of salt per litre of water. For those wondering..... the 150 grams is approx 12 heaped teaspoons.

Fish seem fine this morning, going about there business as usual.

My points are

1. am hoping it benefits Mr Cloudy Eye, as to catch him and set him up in his own tank is a little beyond me at the minute to be honest (have to empty tank of all decor as he's so fast), plus i am not sure if i could get the other tank cycled in time as most / all my mature filter media is being used at present

2. Will it perhaps act a bit of a "tonic" for some of the other fish, whom have minor battle scars (tank contains convicts who breed, say no more!!!!!)

3. Does any of the fish i mentioned in this tank, lead anyone to believe there will be a problem with the temporary addition of this level fo salt?

4. I dont intend on adding anymore salt, over the course of the next few weeks, through a serious of 35-40% water changes, it will obviously be diluted closer and closer back to 100% fresh-water again

5. I will be at home next few days (Man-Flu), if i notice any unexplained "bizarre" behaviour or problems, i can do a 30-50% water change and take it from there

6. I have gone for the proper marine salt over this "tonic" stuff whihc i underdtand isnt real salt??? I have a brackish Molly set-up hence the access to the marine salt. What kind of salt would you peeps have used in this situation and how much?

Just looking for views here or information based on knowledge and experience.

Thanks
