So because of major exams etc, I had been pretty slack over cleaning my oscar tank, finally had time to do it today. I tested the water, just to check how bad it had got, and got the oddest test results. This tank is definitely cycled, it's had the oscar in it 4 months in which time the oscars grown 4 inches. It also houses a blue acara and a psycho baby clown loach who's been put in there since he insists on killing his tankmates.

Anyway the test results are
Ammonia- 0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-0
Ph-7

These are test kits that are well within their use by date, and I only bought them 2 weeks ago, and they have registered ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in other tanks, so why would they be reading nul values for a tank with a big messy baby oscar who can eat his way through a bag of pellets in less then a month? Actually come to think of it the tank itself is filled with junk, and plenty of poo on the bottom....

The tank has no plants bar a few strands on wayward java moss, Though there is quite a bit of algae... is that whats giving the nul values? tis very odd LOL.

Checked again still the same. It's been a month since he got cleaned out (yeah yeah I know, totally slack) and he's eaten virtually a whole bag of Hikari pellets in that time, Hmmmm I might just leave the algae there if it's gonna give me pristine conditions, though I will keep up with the water changes LOL>

Be careful, should that algae die it will release the nutrients it has assimilated back into the water. I would clean out a small amount of it with a water change, allow it to grow back, and repeat in a different area. That way you remove the nutrients completely from the system. :good:

Also, I'm thinking of getting an oscar, are they really as personable as people say they are? It's either going to be an oscar or a silver dollar tank when I upgrade, so I just want to know. Thanks. :hyper:

I'm actually considering selling my oscar... Sure he hangs out near you, and begs for food but he seems to just be an aquatic garbage disposal that happens to recognize who feeds him, I prefer my blue acara LOL, now he does thing, he always flares and attacks the glass when ever I come by, and he's so pretty LOL
