I'm decorating my room including new carpet, and at the same time will be upgrading from 3ft to 4ft tank.

For now I need to get the existing tank + fish + equipment into the adjacent room.

Any tips on how to move it? lol.

I will need to take out at least 50% water probably.
Should I put the fish into a plastic container of water whilst I move to reduce stress or just keep them in there?

You could empty the tank as much as possible, with the enough water for the fish to swim, then "slide the tank" in the other room.

This is good if you have a planted tank that is established and dont want to go ripping it apart.

But if its just decorated with stuff that does settle it, its really best to remove everything , including the gravel, move the tank to the ground, move the stand to the other room, then put the tank on the stand, add just water and fish, get filters running , etc, then once it goes back into the room , add the gravel and decorations
