I've got 13 platy fry (4 days old) in a breeder net. I'm feeding them 3-4 times a day with Liquifry fry food and some frozen live food. I'm just worried that I'm giving them too much and that it's going to rot in the net. I'm seeing they're eating it but there seems to be a lot floating round 30 mins later. What do I do? scoop remains out or let it stay and they can pick at it later? how much is the right amount of food to give? Any advice appreciated.

I dip a toothpick into tank water and then into the liquifry- I reckon what sticks to the pick is about enough for a feed. Rotting food can be very bad for fry. When I used a breeder trap, I used a toothbrush for cleaning out surplus food.

What a great idea, I'll do that. Thanks. I'm buying a 28L tank today to house the fry until they're ready to go into the big tank or to the LFS - I know I can't house them all.

One more question - I'm going away in a month so I'll need to buy something that will slow release food for that's suitable for fry. They'll be 5 weeks old then. What sells here in the UK that would do that?

Thanks!

Most of what they sell as weekend or vacation feeders really foul the water. Depending on how long you are going to be away, the spirulina tabs they sell for plecs will last a couple of days. I use them for angel fry if I am going to be away for a couple of days.

Unfortunatley we'll be gone for 11 days so I'm kind of worried. I can get someone to come in daily and feed the adult fish in my main tank but I'm worried that the fry have to be fed 3-6 times a day. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

5 week old fry should be able to cope with being fed once a day for a short period like that. Particularly if the tank is planted, so they can eat the tiny critters off the plants. My second batch of platy fry were born when we were on holiday, so they had to feed themselves from the start- our fishsitter came in every three days. Not ideal, perhaps, but dirty water would be a bigger problem.
