There are tons of important things that you need to know. I'd suggest getting a book (or site) on plants, esp. those you want and can support.

I'm new to plants too, but Im going for the trial and error method for building my knowledge. I bought 4 different healthy looking plants, after reading up on a coupla forums, placed them in the tank with some feeding pellets near their roots and let them do their thing. I removed the wee lead weights, as I don't like the idea of lead in with my fish: Black Neon Tetras. After almost 4 weeks, the plant growing best is a Limnophila sessiliflora, closely followed by Hygrophila corymbosa "Stricta". By the way, I have a Juwel 60 set-up, with the standard 'real plant' tube.
