How Do You Clean Sand?

Make sure you don't put the syphon into the sand, or too close. If you hover it about a centimeter above the sand and swirl it around a bit, you will find that the waste on top the the sand will rise up a bit and get sucked up. I always have to find a balance between a big tube to get stronger suction, versus a smaller tube that doesn't empty all of the water by the time i have finished cleaning the sand.

You don't put it into the sand because the dirt just sits on top of the sand, unlike gravel..

Yes, agree with all that Squid has said.

With a little pratice and patience you will soon get the hang of cleaning with a minimal loss of sand.

Good point.. was going to mention that and forgot. Losing a little bit of sand is inevitable.. !

I've only cleaned my sand twice but I use a piece of airline and wave it around above the sand. I only use that because its in my fry tank, if it was in any other tank I'd probably use the grqavel cleaner like Squid said
